HitFix: So what were you like in high school?

Jayma Mays: I don’t know how other people preceived me, but I don’t feel like I ever fit in anywhere. I did a little bit of everything. I was a cheerleader. I did Mathletes. I was really across-the-board, like a nutcase. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, so I just did everything. I was even part of FHA, Future Homemakers of America. How lost was I? As you can see today…

HitFix: And so here you are again?

JM: I definitely don’t want to go back to high school. The fact that we’re here tonight gave me hives. It was OK. It was alright. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it.

HitFix: Your character, Emma, is a teacher with an OCD streak. Do you have any of those tendencies?

JM: It’s getting that way. The house is very clean right now, which is great. We don’t have to have a cleaner anymore. There’s a little bit of perfectionist in me, so I can pull the OCD-ness out of that. I’m not a germaphobe, thank goodness, because poor Emma. I leave work feeling frantic and exhausted and anxiety-filled.

HitFix: She also could be perceived as a bit of a homewrecker, since she’s in a near love-triangle with a married teacher.

JM: She is and she isn’t. I don’t feel like Emma would, in any way, want to see  a marriage divorce or dissolve. But she connects with someone and I think, for here, that’s what’s so heartbreaking. She’s not the sort of person who connects with a lot of people and I think the fact that really had a connection with Will and she can’t pursue it, I think that’s what’s really heartbreaking is that she’s not the sort of person who connects with a lot of people, so the fact that she really has a connection with Will, I think that’s what’s really heartbreaking about her.

HitFix: And so why should people watch “Glee”?

JM: A) There’s nothing else like it and there’s always time for a show like that. B) It’s uplifting. It’s a musical. It’s exciting. There’re just so many elements about it that I think people connect with, because they’re in need of something that’s a little heartwarming right now. But it’s still got an edge! I don’t want to make it sound like it doesn’t have an edge.
